Helping the UK’s leading vet charity prepare for a digital and audience-led future

PDSA

PDSA operates 49 pet hospitals and clinics across the UK providing veterinary care for pets whose owners cannot afford the full cost.

PDSA has been helping sick and injured pets for over 100 years.

We provided strategic counsel to the CEO and Chair of Trustees as they looked to review the organisation's approach to income generation.

An ambitious new income and engagement strategy had been drafted, but staff changes and the extent and possible impact of the proposed approach left PDSA's leadership feeling uncertain about the way forward.

We reviewed the strategy and business case, together with a wide range of relevant contextual data and documentation – including financial modelling, a fundraising review, audience research and recent work on market and behavioural segmentations.

Since the new strategy relied upon moving to a more data-led approach to supporter engagement, we also explored its viability in the context of the organisation’s emerging digital, data and technology strategy.

As well providing veterinary care, PDSA is also a leading authority on pet health.

As well as interviews with the senior leadership team, we worked closely with members of PDSA’s income generation and digital teams to explore the implications of the draft strategy, and to understand current challenges and opportunities. Leveraging a range of contacts, we also conducted an intensive deep-dive review of emerging best practice for mass engagement fundraising amongst leading UK charities.

Our final report and presentation captured, in clear terms, our findings and recommendations and provided a high-level roadmap for next steps. Building on insights from the best practice review we also proposed adjustments to the income generation team structure, roles and responsibilities.
